Phase 1 had a modular proportion system supporting the main idea of there being no hierarchy in the buildings so that there can be a horizontal conversation between student and teachers and the traditional thoughts of a university was completely changed. This was VERY radical and everything was calculated and specifically thought through, down to the relationships of the users.

In the new library, A translucent inner membrane filters daylight and creates an atmosphere of privacy and focus, while occasional transparent openings allow some sunlight. The curved shape of the floors creates a pattern in which each floor either projects or is set back with respect to the floor above or below it. This generates a sequence of generous, light-filled spaces in which to work.

Another factor worth noting is that there are no decorative elements. Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
