System - Alison and Peter Smithson, Robin Hood Gardens 1972
The system for the Robin Hood Gardens was to design the best type of social housing at the time for people. It wanted to create space that was comfortable to live in and had the necessities for everyday living. They wanted it to be affordable and include luxuries such as the gardens for communal purposes. The repetitive nature of the stacked apartments and balconies was meant to create "Sky Streets" as the architects stated in their design. Their goal was to turn the standard horizontal street into a vertical space.
