Structure (with floor plan)- Aldo Van Eyck Municipal Orphanage Amsterdam
The units of the program are laid out on an orthogonal grid. Each unit has multiple exterior facades that are created by the units projecting off of two diagonal paths. By doing this, van Eyck created an equal amount of negative spaces from the positive spaces that he formed. Each unit has its own neighboring outdoor space. The structure is a low profile, free plan which creates local courts and repeats modules with individual hipped roofs. The restricted palette of materials was allied with a straightforward structural system.
