Renzo Piano + Richard Rogers Centre Georges Pompidou 1977 -Program-

It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information (Public Information Library), a vast public library; the Musée National d'Art Moderne, which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe; and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research. It also features 2 cinemas and a performance space and a lecture theatre. Below ground is space for car parking and storage. It underwent renovation from 1996 to 1999 and reopened on January 1st 2000. In 2010 an extension to the Centre Pompidou designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban opened as the Centre Pompidou Metz in the west of France.

Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
