Post Modern Intension - Candili, Josic, Woods - The Free Berlin University

This building entered the discourse of Architectural History as a model for educational and social restructuring. It is a modern building with a post modern intention. The concept is to create a free and open space for people with no hierarchy. Which is why they created a horizontal floor plan so that it is easier for the people to understand and use the building for it's purpose.

Another factor worth noting is that there are no decorative elements. The view provided by the wide openings along with the shadows cast by the narrow openings and skylights, and the texture of the concrete both combined, operate as the only ornamentation. Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
