Materials (Tectonic)- The Free Berlin University

Originally the buildings of Phase one of the University were fabricated from Corten steel, which has self-protecting corrosive characteristics however they were used in such thin sections that they were prone to decay. That old cladding had been replaced with a new system detailed in bronze, which as it turns color over time resembles the color tones of the original steel. The new library building, is clad in aluminum and glazed panels.

Another factor worth noting is that there are no decorative elements. The view provided by the wide openings along with the shadows cast by the narrow openings and skylights, and the texture of the concrete both combined, operate as the only ornamentation. Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
