Detail (Context) - The Free Berlin University - Candilis, Josic, Woods

The concept behind the Horizontal and spacial interior plan came from the Radical thinking of the new Education System. But also the context of city grid put a major influence on it. This building is in the middle of the city surrounded by the busy city grid, so it had to have a relationship with the context. The use of light and pre-fabricated materials are present in the construction because they wanted to follow a liberal idea. This image shows the city grid where it is located.

Another factor worth noting is that there are no decorative elements. Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
