Detail Context, Alvar Aalto, Mount Angel Library, Oregon 1972

In 1926, a fire destroyed most of the buildings of the abbey and almost all of its books. In 1972, Aalto was asked by the library's director to design a new building for the library. The building has importance religious significance and to architects, it has a significant connection between humanism and modernism as it is "dedicated to the preservation of materials important to catholic life, education, and research" It is one of two Aalto projects built in the United States.
