Context:Detail - 860–880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments, Mies Van Der Roh

The Lake Shore Drive Apartments were made to give the post-war generation a new high rise building type. The buildings face each other and are divided by an outdoor plaza at ground level. The orientation of the buildings were to give views of the Chicago Loop and Lake Michigan.

Another factor worth noting is that there are no decorative elements. Balanced combination of old and new. The newly constructed bridge that is next to the old both physically and metaphorically represents Scarpa trying to "bridge" the history and the new together. "Visual Logic" is what Scarpa called of the building's different parts, because of its constant sense of fusion between the old and the new. For example, the two new elements Scarpa inserted into the old facade: a gateway for boats, made of a highly textured woven iron within the existing heavy masonry wall.
